Who was the first travel agent?

The first modern day travel agent was Thomas Cook, born in 1808 in Derbyshire UK.After leaving school at the age of 10 he worked as a cabinet maker and part-time publisher of Baptist and Temperance pamphlets before he became a Baptist minister Thomas Cook’s first operation in 1841 was to run an excursion from Leicester and back. He charged passengers a shilling for the return journey. At this time Thomas was only paid a share of the fares he actually charged. This was because the railway tickets issued were legal contracts between the Train Company and passenger only. From this modest venture Thomas Cook continued to arrange train excursions and later years he planned his first overseas excursion to Calais. The following year tours of Europe were arranged and during the 1860’s groups went to Switzerland, Italy, Egypt and United States. In 1874, Thomas Cook introduced ‘circular notes’, a product that we know today as traveller’s cheques. To trace the first online travel agent is a little harder. It was probably established during the late 1990’s as the web did not become well known to the general public until 1994

Our first website was started in 1999, though at that time selling only two countries.
